Toy Talk: Quick Q&A with Kikeimono

STGCC is two weeks away!! Regardless of EARLIER SENTIMENTS, I'm determined to have a good time at the event :P Here's another shameless plug in (check out the haiku at the end!) for local plush designer Gladys Phan and her KIKEIMONO series. There's a sweet sneak of what's going to be at STGCC so if you see a Munchy that you would want to adopt, make a beeline for Booth 31!

How exactly did you get into the business of kikeimono and is there a particular toy/designer which/whom you draw inspiration from?

It all started when i felt like doing some handicraft back in 2009. I came across a tutorial of how to make a toy out of a pair of socks. From then on, i can't stop making more with the ideas i have in mind. My inspirations come from my thoughts and surrounding. I surf etsy occasionally and random internet surfing.

So there isn't *one* particular favourite? None at all? Doesn't have to be toy related! How bout this - Armageddon is tomorrow and you have the super duper power to save 3 designers/artists (your family and friends are safe and sound already so no worries!), who will they be and why?

haha, think i'll answer the fav. than the Armageddon's. Actually i do like to surf http://www.designsponge.com/ It's a website full of pretty things. And http://www.kozyndan.com/ is one of my favourite illustrators. Their drawings are imaginative and impressive!

Her very first sock monster ^^

You ain't a toy/plush collector but you create the cutest sock monsters.does this dichotomy have any impact on the creative process?

Haha, this only crossed my mind when i decided to participate at STGCC this year and realised i don't have much of an idea as to who're the popular designers, or what's HOT or NEW these days! And the fact that I'm going to join at the artist alley this year, I should really find out more! :P This dichotomy actually keeps my mind fresh and clean. I doodle my thoughts, look at it, laugh at it, feel for it, and then I feel the urge of making them. That's what makes me want to make more. The plush toys simply make me happy and give joy to people around me and whenever someone picks up my plush toy at the arts market, they smile. This is really quite rewarding.:)

Is your munchy monster a descendant of the great kaiju (think ultraman monsters)?

Evolve to become Cute descendant maybe.

Which is your absolute favourite and why

This is tough to answer! I guess whichever idea that cheers me up the most will be my favorite. I'm pretty much in love with my 'Be Grateful' series. My ideas are mostly inspired by random thoughts at the spur of the moment and how I'm actually feeling that day. The idea for 'Be Grateful' came to me while i was cooking my own meal. I enjoy cooking and 'steal' many recipes from my mum. At that point in time, I thought, "Isn't it a blessing to have my favorite home-cooked food?" Then I translated this thought into my plush toys with each of them holding their favourite food. Then, alot of people asked me, "Why are they crying?" I said, "Well, its their tears of joy, appreciating the simplest things in life!"

Write a haiku

"Munch" and "Crunch". That's all they do. Their Fav. food: iPhone.
